Dubai International Airport recorded a massive 25% surge in passenger traffic year-over-year for September and an 11.3% rise in international freight. Some 34.09 million passengers passed through Dubai airport in the first 9 months of 2010, up 15.8% compared to the same period in 2009. The largest growth was seen on routes to and from Eastern Europe (up 247%), other Middle East destinations (up 36%), Asia/Pacific (up 33%), Africa (up 25%) and Western Europe (up 23%).
Cargo volumes showed double-digit growth for the 12th consecutive month as September traffic rose 11.3% to 187,390 tonnes from 168,335 tonnes during the same month last year. 9-month cargo volumes totaled 1,685,634 tonnes, a 24% year-over-year increase.
According to Dubai Airports CEO Paul Griffiths, growth is occurring across the board. “Clearly Dubai’s aviation model is working,” he said. “Open skies, supportive government policies, Dubai’s attractiveness as a business and leisure destination, as well as its ideal location as a convenient global transit point, are behind this impressive growth.” More than 130 airlines serve Dubai.
