The recent opening of the Jebel Ali Metro Station in Dubai now brings the number of Dubai Metro stations opened on the red line to 27.
The Jebel Ali Metro Station is unique with respect to the fact that it is the only metro station in Dubai built at ground level. The Jebel Ali Metro Station measures 132 meters in length and 29 meters in width and has a total capacity to handle approximately 11,000 passengers per hour in each direction.
Jebel Ali Metro Station mainly serves the Jebel Ali area and in particular the Jebel Ali Free Zone (Jafza) North and South as well as Jebel Ali Port. Jebel Ali Industrial Area is home to around 6,600 companies which employ around 129,000 employees and the number of staff accommodated within Jafza is in the region of 40,000.
As the Jebel Ali Station is located at the terminal point of the Dubai Metro Red Line, the track of trains in operation is extended by 9 km to reach 53 km. The RTA confirmed that they will operate 24 trains in the morning peak hours and 29 trains in the evening peak hours at an interval between services ranging from 6 to 8 minutes in the morning peak period, and from 5 to 6 minutes in the evening peak period.
According to the RTA Statistics Office, January and February topped 9.3 million passengers travelling on the Dubai Metro (4.7 million passengers in January and 4.6 million passengers in February). In 2010 the Metro in Dubai moved 38.8 million passengers and the current daily average is 149,000.
